HypnotherapyHypnotherapy has been approved for use by the British Medical Association for more than 40 years. It's a form of therapy which enables you to enlist the help of your conscious and unconscious/ subconscious mind. The emphasis is goal orientated, and allows you to focus your attention internally, re accessing resources, and creating new associations, patterns of thinking and behaving. It is not the same as sleep, but is an altered state of mind similar to daydreaming, or becoming so absorbed in an activity that you lose all track of time. During these times you are not asleep, merely unconcerned about your surroundings at the time. Therefore you do not lose control during hypnosis as your attention is focused on your internal world, so you are even more aware of physical and psychological changes, hence, even more in control of yourself. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will, so if you choose not to be hypnotised, you will not be. However, it is said that if you allow the process to occur, that most people are hypnotisable. It is important to have a comfortable and trusting relationship with your therapist. Total amnesia for the entire hypnotic procedure is unlikely. Sometimes it will be necessary for you to remember certain portions of the process in order to ensure your total success. Occasionally people believe they remember everything, because they are totally unaware of the information they have forgotten. Sometimes people believe they have fallen asleep, and remember almost nothing about the process, although report feeling very relaxed. In this event it is unlikely that sleep has occurred, but rather a deep level of trance, accompanied by amnesia. No drugs are needed for this therapy. The hypnotherapist merely uses their voice to create pleasant scenes, which may mean that you will be picturing, as in daydreams, the things that are being spoken of, and that you may experience the associated pleasant feelings. The worst possible side effect is that you will fall asleep! If the hypnotherapist were to stop talking for a while, you could either allow yourself to become more relaxed and so fall asleep, or you could open your eyes. You are in total control of your trance experience. On the other hand, the best possible side effect that you will notice is a complete alleviation of your presenting problem, and the knowledge that you were able to create your own success. The Hypnotherapy treatment You are treated in a calm environment, which is warm and comfortable. You remain fully clothed (although you may choose to take your shoes off to increase your comfort). A blanket will be offered as you often find that sitting still for up to an hour can allow you to start feeling cold. Then all you need to do is relax and follow the instructions given to you by the therapist. Your first session will include time for the therapist to get to know you by the completion of a consultation sheet. Further sessions may include a review of your experiences in the time since the last treatment. What can hypnotherapy do for you? Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help with a vast range of problems including the following: · Emotional problems · Unwanted habits · Social difficulties · Self image · Performance improvement · Treatment of certain medical conditions · Pain control · Stress and anxiety · Fears and phobias · Stopping smoking · … and many more.
